British gold sovereigns are coins of interest to gold investors and collectors as they have historically been used as circulating currency in the British Empire and are an excellent store of value. The name derives from the English gold sovereign, which was minted more than two centuries before the sovereign.
The new sovereign was developed as part of the Great Recoinage of 1816 to stabilize the British economy after the military and economic wars with the various regimes of troubled France.
