Britannia coins were first issued in 1987 as 1 ounce gold coins. In 1997, the Royal Mint began producing the 1 ounce silver Britannia coin as a proof coin and then as a bullion coin in 1998. In 2023, the Royal Mint issued the last Britannia featuring the effigy of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This was a limited edition and was followed by the Britannia coins featuring the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III in 2023.
